It looks like a knobthorn, so a miracle it got that big! But there were far fewer elephants then!

A mud-packing Tsessebe

This exercise is achieved by horning muddy patches of ground while the animal is on its knees. Ground-horning and mud-packing are displays of territorial dominance, the mudpack makes the horn looking more impressive

This guy dedicated a lot of time to these exercises and then went off in full muddy glory.

I wonder if there are any lion photos from this dam? I could have sworn someone put one up somewhere...

Meanwhile on the following EARLY morning I arrived at Grootvlei dam and found 17 and not 13 lions on the dam wall and a huge male unsighted about 500m into the bush roaring his head off...It wasnt overcast this morning just heavy mist as the sun appeared ..creating LOVELY bright SOFT light which didnt even cast a shadow as they let me (Familiar with my vehicle now) approach them as these 2 youngsters beat the hell out of each other in a mock fight (Sickening thuds) Boxing Lions.

Xmas in the 2015/2016 drought

A large herd of buffalo came in from the south and had a quick drink. Photo taken from the dam wall.

Just a side note, one wasn't allowed to go onto the wall in the old days, at least not when we were there...
