Proposed hydro power station at Augrabies
Does anyone have more info about this? See http://www.sanparks.org/about/news/default.php?id=56201 The SANParks statement reads: "A proposal has been tabled to construct a 40 Megawatt hydropower station on the Orange River, on the farm Riemvasmaak, North of the Augrabies Falls. The power station ...

Re: Adventure activities survey for national parks
I agree with RobertT that the survey makes it impossible to differentiate between different types of parks. For instance, some soft adventure activities are inevitable in the likes of Table Mountain and Garden Route, and I don't object to some of those. But I object strongly to the same kind of ...

Re: Riverbed cycle challenge in Kgalagadi
I agree that no cycle event inside the park would be first prize. However, I'm prepared to take what I can in the improved scenario, e.g. 1. I'm much happier about all the traffic being on an existing road, rather than across virgin territory in the riverbed. 2. SP will now draw up an EMP - which ...

Re: Riverbed cycle challenge in Kgalagadi
By admitting that those parks are also ecosensitive and asking why must the event move to Richtersveld e.g. they are actually saying cycling will have an impact on eco sensitive parks and therefore they can not exclude KTP from this type of activity and only damage the image other parks as pristine ...

Re: Riverbed cycle challenge in Kgalagadi
Oh dear. The SANParks Forum has just been locked once again, with the comment: "It would seem that all has been said so this topic will now be locked until more information becomes available." All has been said? I think not. Thankfully, this forum and my website discussion at http://ow.ly/fl6OR are ...

Re: Riverbed cycle challenge in Kgalagadi
Many of us would have preferred the cycle event to take place south of Twee Rivieren, outside the park, but I think we need to recognise that the move onto existing roads instead of the riverbed, and to the south rather than the far north, is at least a compromise. It's not perfect for many reasons ...

Re: Riverbed cycle challenge in Kgalagadi
A month after we first posed questions, they remain unanswered. Even 10 days after a promised reconsidered response, we still can’t get a response about when to expect to see that response! But the questions don’t go away. For instance: 1. Which qualified staff (e.g. section rangers, ecologists, bi ...

Re: Riverbed cycle challenge in Kgalagadi
It would be very interesting to know how much in supporting finance this project of Kanabo Conservation Link had behind it. It would make a mockery of the stated imperative to raise funds through the cycle event if we were to discover that an equal or greater amount was turned down from this no ...
