Richprins - a good anology for a bridge camera is a P&S on steroids - the Nikon P900 bridge camera has an 83x optical zoom- that's like a 2000mm in 35mm terms! There were primarily two types of cameras - point and shoot with very limited control over aperture, shutter speed etc. and then DSLRs (Digital Single Lens Reflex) with full control over everything. The Bridge camera is inbetween the two - it provides some manual control but still lacks some things ...

The only time we have experienced dangerous animals at getout points was a pride of lions at the picnic site at the far north of the Nossob - they were under the tables, in the toilets and even in the fenced area at the side of the toilet - they wanted all the shade and we wanted to pee!

I agree with Flutterby - a DSLR is best. As your photography improves and you visit the parks more often you will want the options the DSLR provides. I currently shoot with the Nikon D7100 and Sigma C 150-600mm lens - great combo for African safaris! Looking at the new Nikon D500 body...
