Lion attack at popular wildlife centre

Nelspruit - Volunteering at a wildlife rehabilitation centre is a popular gap year option for many young adventurers, however, sometimes it may end up being a wilder experience than expected.
An 18-year-old Canadian woman's dream of working with wild animals took a dramatic turn when a lion at the Moholoholo rehabilitation centre near Hoedspruit in Limpopo attacked her.
Beeld reports that Lauren Fagen of Montreal, Quebec, had to fight for her life on Tuesday when Duma, a male lion, tried to drag her through the fence surrounding his enclosure.
The animal reportedly reached through the railings with one of his paws and grabbed Fagen's right leg while she was busy feeding him.
Fagen told the paper that the attack came completely unexpectedly, as the big cat had been particularly friendly moments before - rubbing his head and body against the enclosure, as though he was begging to be petted.
She tried fending him off by kicking him away with her left leg, which only led to him dragging her further into the enclosure.
"I screamed and everything around me faded. I only really realised what was happening when other volunteers came rushing closer," she said.
One of the volunteers grabbed a stick and started hitting the lion and he let go shortly after.
Her injuries were treated on the scene after which she was rushed to Mediclinic Nelspruit. Fortunately the lion's razor sharp teeth just missed a main artery in her groin.
Although Fagen would like to complete her stint at the centre, she told Beeld that she is not sure how she'd react to the lion once she returned.
Brian Jones from Moholoholo said that they warn their volunteers about the dangers of working with wild animals on a regular basis and that no action would be taken against Duma.

Cape Town – Hollywood star Adam Sandler has had a close encounter with a cheetah while on a visit to a private game farm in South Africa.
Sandler, who was in South Africa recently to shoot new film Blended with actress Drew Barrymore, told talk show host David Letterman on Wednesday that he was attacked by a cheetah while on a private safari on one of his off days.
"I went there, there were very nice people at this place and they let me in with the cheetah … and said I could feed the cheetah water with my hands, and so I did it … and something went a little bit wrong," Sandler told the Late Night with David Letterman host.
In a video clip of the incident, Sandler can be seen crouching near the water when the cheetah suddenly jumps on his back. One of the rangers in the camp then runs over to get the animal off his back.
"What happened was they said you're not supposed to bend down low by the water and that's why he got mad ... I played it off real good ... (but) I was very nervous," he explains.
"I swear to God when he jumped on me all I was gonna do was let him eat me, there was not one part of me that was gonna fight back. I was like, 'Alright, this is how I'm dying," Sandler was quoted by Toronto Sun as saying.

Lioness attacks little boy

Bloemfontein - A ‘tame' lioness attacked a ten-year-old boy at the Zanchieta Wildcat farm outside Bloemfontein over the weekend.
Beeld reports that Johan Opperman, a learner from Willem Postma Primary in Bloemfontein, visited the farm with his father, Andries, to celebrate Elsa's, the lioness who attacked him, fifth birthday party.
Mid-celebration, Elsa managed to get hold of Johan's arm through her encampment's railings and kept a fierce grip on his jacket sleeve. The boy was standing with his back to the encampment when Elsa swiped her paw through the railing and grabbed his left arm.
He was rushed to the Bloemfontein Mediclinic where his wound was cleaned under anaesthetic to destroy any bacteria and prevent infection.
Amanda Appelgryn, a spokesperson for the hospital said Johan would undergo an operation on Monday to reattach muscle and tissue.
Scores of people visited the farm over the weekend to celebrate Elsa's birthday. Her owner, Miekie van Ronder, 25, had spent much of the day inside the Elsa's enclosure and was fortunately there to help release the lion's grip on the little boy.
Van Tonder said she felt embarrassed and terrible about the incident. "Lions stay wild. They are not like cheetah, which lose their wildness after a while in captivity," she said.
This comes a few weeks after a similar incident involving a Canadian tourist took place at the Moholoholo wildlife rehabilitation centre in Hoedspruit.

Eish another incident at another establishment that just continue ad nauseum - these are wild animals - this is not about petting zoos - that is not conservation!

A snake escaped from a pet shop and killed two children in the Canadian province of New Brunswick, police say. The victims, ages 5 and 7, were staying overnight at a friend’s apartment above a pet shop named, ”Reptile Ocean.”
Two young boys, ages 5 and 7, who were sleeping at a friend’s apartment above an exotic pet store were strangled by a python that escaped its enclosure in the Canadian town of Campbellton, New Brunswick, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Monday.
“The preliminary investigation has led police to believe that a python snake escaped its enclosure in the store sometime overnight,” said Constable Julie Rogers-Marsh. Police were notified about 6:30 a.m.
A former employee of the pet shop told the National Post that the snake was an African rock python, the continent’s largest snake, which can grow to 20 feet long. In the wild, African rock pythons feed on monkeys, antelopes, warthogs and even crocodiles. In suburban areas, their prey includes dogs, goats, rats or fowl. They rarely attack humans, but when they do, the victims are usually children.
Police said it was not yet clear how the non-venomous snake escaped. They believe the snake slipped out of its cage overnight and travelled through the ventilation and strangled the boys. Autopsies will be performed on the boys on Tuesday.
The reptile has been captured by police; not before leaving the town of around 7,000 people, in far eastern Canada, “in shock,” said Campbellton Deputy Mayor Ian Comeau. Comeau also stated that the snakes have only been imported legally since 2009.
The FaceBook page for Reptile Ocean, states it is an exotic pet store “open to the public for purchase and viewing.” It opened in 1995 and is categorized as a “noncommercial zoological gardens.”
In January, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission held a month-long competition to capture and kill invasive Burmese pythons in the Everglades. Florida wildlife officials say African rock pythons pose an even bigger threat to the state and are more dangerous than their Burmese cousins.
“This is just one vicious animal,” Kenneth Krysko, a herpetologist at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville, said in a 2009 National Geographic article. He said African pythons are “so mean they come out of the egg striking.”
Krysko goes on to say, “The African snake is a constrictor. Lacking poison, it kills animals by encircling and literally squeezing the life out of them. Florida wildlife may not be the only creatures at risk. In Africa, rock pythons are known to have attacked humans, hidden in a Florida swamp, he added, the African python “could strike you and you wouldn’t even know it was there.”
Africa’s largest snake is found in a variety of habitats, from forests to near deserts, although usually near sources of water. The African rock python kills its prey by constriction and often eats animals up to the size of antelope, occasionally even crocodiles. The snake reproduces by egg-laying. Unlike most snakes, the female will protect her nest and sometimes even her hatchlings.
This snake is widely feared even though it only very rarely kills humans. Although the snake is not endangered, it does face threats from habitat reduction and hunting.
The African rock python’s body is thick and covered with colored blotches, often joining up in a broad, irregular stripe. Body markings vary between brown, olive, chestnut, and yellow, but fade to white on the underside. The head is triangular and is marked on top with a dark brown “spear-head” outlined in bright yellow. Teeth are many, sharp, and backwardly curved. Like all pythons, the scales of the African rock python are small and smooth. Those around the lips possess heat-sensitive pits, which are used to detect warm-blooded prey, even in the dark.
Although this snake is known to rarely eat humans it sure has no problem killing them. It somehow managed to escape its living arrangements at Reptile Ocean and kill two small children in New Brunswick, Canada.
