Rhino poaching update 03 July 2013

The total number of rhinos poached in South Africa since the beginning of the year has increased to 461. Since the start of 2013, a total of 288 rhinos have been poached in the Kruger National Park. A total of 51 rhinos have been poached in North West, 47 in Limpopo, 41 in KwaZulu-Natal, 31 in Mpumalanga, 2 in the Eastern Cape and 1 in Gauteng.

Of the 137 alleged poachers arrested, 60 have been caught in the Kruger National Park. Five people have been charged with being receivers.

South Africa cannot continue to be held hostage by the syndicates slaughtering our rhinos, said Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa.

South Africans are urged to report incidents of poaching and tip-offs to the anonymous tip-off lines 0800 205 005, 08600 10111 or Crime-Line on 32211.

This has been out of control for ages now, but after todays parliamentary decision I fear it is going to get a lot more out of control in a very short space of time. O/ O/ O/

We'll be mourning over 1000 by the end of the year BC. The rate per day is steadily rising. Things are getting worse, not better or even on a par.

Toko,
Allison Thomson of OSCAP kept up a running quote of the dialogue on their FB page as the briefing was being held (it was also live streamed). \O
