Re: What is Wrong with this Picture?
I would have kept it horizontal and cropped it with the Lions left eye on the intersect of the thirds lines top right. This will leave a reasonable area for the Lion to "look" into.

Sometimes it’s not until you don’t see what you want to see, that you truly open your eyes.

That's something I must try to remember more often! -OPRWIN wrote:I normaly take a wide shot like that and then crop to how I will like the photo as on a couple occas I have wished I had a full- landscape shot also to play with. Just gives one more scope

No I wont do that on this shot as is he is looking at you and that is what you want (at least thats the way I like it). 2ndly why I say no you don't have too much space in front of the cat to play with. Also you look from left to right, by doing that you are looking into his gaze.
Another major problem is that you have cut the front paws off, now you have only one option and that is to go for a portrate shot. I would cut the bottom off half way belowe the chin and then up along the ear removing the back legs as well. Top and front is all right to me.
Then its the normale colour, highlightes amd saturation to be added th finish the shot
I am posting this now but will edded it and repost the picture and try and explane what I did when I have finished as I still have to see what will work

Firstly I croped it like I said, then I darkend the area around the lion, added yellow and orange as it was a bit light. I also rotated the crop clock wise as well to get the look down a bit, darkend certain areas on the lion and of course lightend the area and added saturation on different levels to the eyes and the cat. Lastly towned down the colours a bit and added black with highlites and sharpend it again
After seing the orig I would have gone as Sprocky has saide and per Examples belowe.
I hope that it has helped

Let's get this going again.
Would I have got a better result using a flash here? And is the composition right?

Re: What is Wrong with this Picture?
Flutterby sorry I can't help you with the flash as I never use a flash in daylight
I hope you don't mind but I twiged your photo a bit in light room, all I did was down the exposure and did selective darkening in the overexposed area's and theb lightend the eye's also adding a bit of red at the same time.
Youre comp was not bad,as for me I realy dont worry about the comp till I start working on it. This is how I see the photo
. Ps I like the branch leading into the photo.

Makes a huge difference!
Now I have to learn how to do all this post processing to get my shots acceptable.

Re: What is Wrong with this Picture?
To me the art of photography is all about composition!
Moreso than all the technicalities that come with it!
Some folk wish to see arrow heads split apples,..... to
technical for me. Flutts there is a degree of composition
here, making it a interesting shot. Flash would have been
disturbing, if you had one strong enough!
Flash comes in handy when sunlight is very bright, it removes
all the hard shadows.
