I love all the beautifully coloured photos. O:V And I would like the lion shots as well. O**
But I'm still pouting with that guy as he never once looked at me during a 4 day siege of the camp by him and is his family. 0-

Day 9 - 11th October - Continued

We are still in camp sharing it with this beautiful big male lion. SO wanted a better angle so went to the kitchen area.

It was now around 7am and for some reason today the bees were hectic. SO got stung for the first time around 7.15am and again at about 8am so we decided that sitting outside was not a healthy place to be. We endeavoured to remove both the stingers which we thought we had done.

We now had a real dilemma as we wanted to spend the day in camp and we had a male lion who had decided to spend the day at the waterhole – what to do??

After spending a few hours inside we decided this was not going to work and got in the van and decided that we would drive for the majority of the day. We did this driving both north and south but as it was a hot day sightings were very limited.

We did get to see this which for people who visit KNP a lot will think strange as these are everywhere not in KTP I can assure you.

Warthog

Before giving birth to a new litter, the female chases away the litter she has been raising and secludes herself. These juveniles may join up with another solitary female for a short time before they go on their own.

Female warthogs only have four teats, so litter sizes usually are confined to four young. Each piglet has its "own" teat and suckles exclusively from it. Even if one piglet dies, the others do not suckle from the available teat. Although the young are suckled for about 4 months, after 2 months they get most of their nourishment from grazing.

We arrived back at camp quite frustrated at 6.30pm as the male lion was still there and due to the bee issue we could not enjoy it.

The bees had obviously disappeared by that time and for dinner we had fillet steak, peppercorn sauce, baked potato and butternut. Tonight a large amount of alcohol was consumed as we were not the happiest campers in the world. We have now had 5 days of bees and were sick of them. SO’s one bite is now completely swollen and has a concerning rash. We ensure on all our trips that we carry a large medical box we applied the cream as required and decided we would make a decision whether to go to Uptington in the morning. We eventually got into bed at 9.45pm tired but the day ended well with the owls calling and the lion roaring his lungs out.

Day 10 - 12th October

We got up at 5.15am packed attempted to boil water on the gas when the wind was howling (not a very good idea took over an hour). The plan was to pack up before the bee invasion which normally happens about 7h30am. The packing went smoothly and while doing this we had lots of animals and many brown hyena arrived at the waterhole to drink we suspect it was so busy as the male lion moved on around 2am in the morning.

We collected our permit from Franco and departed Grootkolk at 7.10am.

Coming to think of it, maybe it wasn't too bad after all that the lion was so un-accommodating regarding my camera.
At least we were lucky enough not to be hassled by the bees too much. The SO is highly allergic to bee stings, so we
would have had a real problem. (And he's also stupid enough not to have a first aid kid for the worst case - not a good
idea when being in KTP 0- ).

I have a few shots of the lion anyways, back from the days when he and his mate / brother still roamed the Kwang
area. But with an own pride, he looks much better now than he did then. \O

We had seen him again after he had taken over the Grootkolk pride. But also then - despite getting really close to him,
as he way lying in the road - he never lifted his head and looked at my camera straight. Maybe he just doesn't really
like me. :-0

Beautiful images of the uglybeest. :-) And I'm impressed by the warthog close ups. They tend to stay far away from us
up there. Always only far off sightings in the Nossob riverbed. :O^

PRWIN this is the first and I hope the only year the bees are such an issue.

Day 10 - 12th October - Continued

Today was a moving day as we where departing Grootkolk with mixed feelings and heading south towards Nossob for the next few nights. We hit the t junction outside and turned the van right on our way. As per normal we had no idea what to expect sightings wise but we knew is was a fairly long drive.

As we reached the first waterhole SO told me to stop. I could not see anything and we were about 500m from the waterhole. She took her camera out and I still could not see what see was looking at. Glad she has good eye sight (looks like Grootkolk male out on patrol).
