Bateleur Terathopius ecaudatus
Identification
63 cm; sexes similar. Very distinctive with red facial skin, grey shoulder patches and long wings that extend past the very short tail.
Male: When perched, flight feathers appear black; in flight, black trailing edge to white underwing considerably broader than female.
Female: When perched, primaries show pale grey wing panel (below grey-brown shoulder patch). In flight underwing white with narrow black trailing edge.
Juvenile: Uniform brown plumage; cere and facial skin grey-green and short tail distinctive.
