213. Black Crake Amaurornis flavirostra

Identification
19–23 cm. Sexes similar, though male is larger. Plumage mainly black. Brown/olive tinge on the wings and upperparts. Red eye. Yellow bill. Feet & legs red (duller when not breeding).
Juvenile: Brown upperparts. Dark grey head and underparts. Greeny- yellow bill. Dull red feet and legs.

185. Dickinson’s Kestrel Falco dickensoni

Identification
29 cm; sexes alike, female larger and slightly darker grey. Key features pale grey square-shaped head contrasting with dark grey body, pale grey rump and boldly barred upper tail.
Juvenile: Pale brown wash and less contrast in head and body colours. Eye-ring and cere blue-green or pale yellow.

237. Red-crested Korhaan Eupodotis ruficrista

Identification
50 cm.
Male: Elongated rufous crest feathers usually only visible in display during br season and seldom seen. Separated from male Black-bellied Bustard by lack of black line down foreneck, greyish (not brownish) crown and buff (not white) cheeks.
Female: Belly black as in male, crown brown flecked white. (Female Black-bellied Bustard has white belly).
Juvenile: Like female but with buff tips to flight feathers.

255. Crowned Lapwing Vanellus coronatus

Identification
31 cm; sexes alike,male larger than female. Sandy brown upperparts, bright red bill and legs, and distinctive head pat­tern unlike any other Vanellus plover. Legs and bill duller, more pinkish red in non-br season.
Juvenile: Forehead buff-brown, crown band buffy. Upperparts buff fringed.

258. Blacksmith Lapwing Vanellus armatus

Identification
30 cm; sexes alike. Unlikely to be confused with any other species in region, with distinctive black, white and grey plumage, and black legs.
Male has longer wing spurs than female.
Juvenile: Black plumage browner, and with buff tips to feathers.

259. White-crowned Lapwing Vanellus albiceps

Identification
30 cm. This large lapwing has pendulous, yellow wattles. Wings and tail are patterned in black and white, brown back, white underparts, mainly grey head with a white crown and foreneck. The eyering, facial wattles and legs are yellow. Females, males and young birds are similar in plumage.

298. Water Thick-Knee (formerly known as Water Dikkop) Burhinus vermiculatus

Identification
40 cm; sexes alike. Pale grey wing panel and accompanying narrow white bar. Upperparts streaked (not spotted). In flight, pale (grey) wing panel conspicuous.
Juvenile: More vermiculated upperparts and with buff freckling on wing cov­erts.

347. Double-banded Sandgrouse Pterocles bicinctus

Identification
25 cm. The only Sandgrouse species in the Kruger National Park.
Male: Black and white forehead band and narrow black and white breast band distinctive.
Female: Barred upper breast.
Juvenile: Similar to female, upperparts more pinkish fawn.

353. African Mourning Dove Streptopelia decipiens

Identification
30 cm; sexes alike. Could be confused with both Red-eyed Dove and Cape Turtle-Dove, but combi­nation of yellow eyes and red skin around eyes diagnostic. Black collar on hindneck edged with white above. Usually gives presence away by bubbling call.
Juvenile: Browner than ad; wing coverts tipped buff.
