355. Laughing Dove Streptopelia senegalensis

Identification
25 cm; sexes very similar. Female paler than male. Only dove in region with pinkish-grey head and rufous chest with black spotting; lacks black collar on hindneck. White outer tail feathers conspicuous in flight. Partially melanistic individuals occasionally recorded.
Juvenile: Breast grey, lacks black speckling. Overall paler and browner than adult.

373. Grey Go-away Bird (Formerly known as Grey Lourie) Corythaixoides concolor

Identification
49 cm; sexes alike. Very distinctive all-grey bird that is common in the bushveld and unlikely to be confused with any other species.
Juvenile: Paler than ad with shorter crest and buffy tinge to feathers.

391. Burchell's Coucal Centropus burchellii

Identification
41 cm. Sexes alike in plumage colouration, females slightly larger than males. Black heads and tails; back and wings are rufous-brown and underparts are white. Eyes are red; bills, legs and feet are black.
Juvenile: White eyebrow and streaked, brownish crown.

402. Verreaux's Eagle-Owl (formerly known as Giant Eagle Owl) Bubo lacteus

Identification
62 cm; sexes alike, but female about 10% larger and 30% heavier than male, pale, finely barred milky grey underparts, grey-brown back, pinkish eyelids and very large size make this owl unmistakable (much larger and greyer than Spotted Eagle-Owl).
Juvenile: Fledges with grey-brown down, grey bars on head and body and with smaller 'ears'.

Identification
Wingspan 33 cm, length 12 cm; sexes alike. Black plumage. White throat. White rump wrapping down onto flanks. Short square tail.
Juvenile: Grey head and body with white-edged flight feathers.

Identification
25 cm; sexes similar. Only kingfisher in region with an all black and white plumage. Male with double breast band. Female easily separable with single breast band.
Juvenile: Breast band greyish black; feathers on face, throat and breast fringed buff.

429. Giant Kingfisher Megaceryle maxima

Identification
42 - 48 cm, sexes similar. It has a large crest and finely spotted white on black upperparts.
The male has a chestnut breast band and otherwise white underparts with dark flank barring, while the female has a white-spotted black breast band and chestnut belly.
Juveniles: Female all white underneath. Male with speckled black breast band.

Identification
22-24 cm; sexes alike, only bee-eater in region with red/white throat combination. Green upperparts. Cinnamon underparts. Black mask. White forehead. Bright red throat. Square tail. Dark trailing edge to wings, visible in flight.
