447. Lilac-breasted Roller Coracias caudatus

Identification
29 cm (36 cm incl streamers); sexes alike. Only roller with lilac throat and breast and blue belly. Long, straight outer tail streamers absent during moult (post-br).
Juvenile: Like ad but duller with brownish wash on crown and nape; tail streamers absent.

449. Purple Roller Coracias naevius

Identification
33 cm; sexes alike. Broad cream eyebrow, purple-brown underparts heavily streaked with white, and stocky thickset build make it unmistakable. Black bill and light eye-stripe separate it from smaller Broad-billed Roller.
Juvenile: Duller than adult.

451. African Hoopoe Upupa africana

Identification
26 cm; sexes similar, male larger than female. Conspicuous and unlikely to be confused with any other species. Crest usually held flattened, forming a long point behind the crown, and only raised when bird lands, in display or when alarmed. Female is duller rufous than male and slightly greyer on face and breast.
Juvenile: Like female but duller and with shorter crest. Bill initially shorter and less decurved.

458. Southern Red-billed Hornbill Tockus rufirostris

Identification
40 cm; sexes alike, male larger and longer billed with black patch at base of lower mandible. Mainly whitish underparts, grey/black upperparts. Red bill.
Juvenile: Bill smaller and more orange; eyes grey, turning brown then yellow.

459. Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill Tockus leucomelas

Identification
48-60 cm. Sexes alike. White belly. Grey neck. Black back covered with white spots and stripe. Yellow bill. Bare red skin around eyes and malar stripe. Eyes yellow.
Juvenile has smaller bill and is more dusky; eyes grey becoming brown.
