743. Brown-crowned Tchagra (formerly known as Three-streaked Tchagra) Tchagra australis

Identifiction
17.5 cm; sexes alike. Combination of brown crown and buff or grey-buff underparts separates it from other tchagras. Bill may be dark, horn brown or black. Pale brown above, including centre of crown; white eyebrow bordered above and below by black line; below buffy white.
Juvenile: Bill grey or horn coloured, tenninal tail spots buff and wings less rufous.

748. Orange-breasted Bushshrike Chlorophoneus sulfureopectus, Telophorus sulfureopectus

Identification
19 cm; sexes alike, but female duller and with narrower eyebrow. Top of head grey; forehead, eyebrow and underparts bright yellow, washed bright orange across breast; back and tail bright olive green, tipped yellow.
Much smaller than Grey-headed Bush-Shrike, distinguished by lighter bill, yellow forehead and eyebrow, and reddish-brown (not pale yellow) eyes.
Juvenile: Head and face pale grey, lightly barred white. Underparts pale yellow, with only a faint tinge of orange.

764. Cape Starling, Cape Glossy Starling Lamprotornis nitens

Identification
23 cm; sexes alike, male larger than female. Eyes orange-yellow. Entirely metallic blue-green, washed faintly purplish on ear coverts (ear coverts not contrasting with head as much as in blue-eared starlings); small purplish copper area on wrist; 2 rows of dark spots on wing coverts (similar to Greater Blue-eared Starling); eye bright orange-yellow.
Similar to Greater Blue-eared Starling, but less brilliantly lustrous; sheen more blue than green and lacks darker ear coverts
Juvenile: Similar to adult, but duller; iris greyish or greenish.

765. Greater Blue-eared Starling Lamprotornis chalybaeus

Identification
21-24 cm; sexes alike. Eye bright orange. High silken sheen overall, bright blue-green coloration. Dark blue ear coverts contrast strongly with green head colouring (much less contrast in Glossy Starling); entirely shiny blue-green, belly glossed royal blue (blue-green in Glossy Starling); wrist purplish copper; 2 rows of black spots on wing coverts (as in Glossy Starling). Very similar to Glossy Starling, but more satiny lustrous all over.
Juvnile: Dull brownish black with only slight gloss; eye grey.

791. Scarlet-chested Sunbird Chalcomitra senegalensis

Identification
14 cm.
Male: Mostly sooty black; bright scarlet breast, iridescent green throat and forecrown, and velvety blackish body unmistakable; no eclipse plumage. Immature male similar to female, but has mottled scarlet breast patch. Lacks pectoral tufts.
Female: Overall darker plumage, above greenish grey-brown; malar stripe buffy white; throat, breast and upper belly brown, mottled yellow. Whitish alula (shoulder edge) and lack of pale eyebrow separate it from female Amethyst Sunbird.
Juvenile: Like female, underparts yellower and barred rather than streaked. Gape whitish or pale yellow, turning orange then finally black. Sometimes with some green and red on throat and breast in male.

793. Collared Sunbird Hedydipna collaris (formerly: Anthreptes collaris)

Identification
11cm. Bill short, only slightly decurved.
Male: Upperparts and throat brilliant metallic green; throat bordered by narrow bluish purple band; rest of underparts yellow; pectoral tufts lemon yellow; no eclipse plumage. Female: Similar to male, but lacks green and blue throat, underparts wholly yellow.
Juvenile: Similar to adult female.

Identification
12 cm; sexes alike. Eyering white; above greyish green; throat and undertail yellow; rest of underparts variable (greenish-yellow breast and belly most common in the Kruger National Park).
Juvenile: Duller than adult; white eyering develops at about 5 weeks.

801. House Sparrow Passer domesticus

Identification
14 cm. Rump grey (diagnostic in flight; indigenous species of Passer all have rufous rumps). Bill black (breeding male) or horn (female and non-breeding male).
Male: Crown and nape grey in centre, chestnut at sides; forehead, eyestripe, throat and upper breast black, scaled white on breast; mantle tawny, streaked black; wingbar white; rest of underparts dull white.
Female: Above buffy brown, streaked black on back; eyebrow buffy white; face grey; dusky line through eye; below off-white.
Juvenile: Similar to adult female but paler and duller.

821. Red-billed Quelea Quelea quelea

Identification
12 cm. Red bill diagnostic in all adults, except breeding females.
Breeding male: Face mask most commonly black but may be white, surrounded by yellowish or pink band.
Non-breeding male: Bright head features turn brown; throat white, bill remains red.
Female: Similar to non-breeding male, but head streaked like back; bill and eye-ring dull yellow in breeding season.
Juvenile: Like adult female, bill horn brown.

Identification
12.5 cm; sexes similar, female with paler and less extensive blue on face and underparts. Only small waxbill in region with pale blue underparts, tail and rump.
Juvenile: Blue restricted to face, throat, breast, rump and tail.
