Identifiction
17.5 cm; sexes alike. Combination of brown crown and buff or grey-buff underparts separates it from other tchagras. Bill may be dark, horn brown or black. Pale brown above, including centre of crown; white eyebrow bordered above and below by black line; below buffy white.
Juvenile: Bill grey or horn coloured, tenninal tail spots buff and wings less rufous.

Identification
19 cm; sexes alike, but female duller and with narrower eyebrow. Top of head grey; forehead, eyebrow and underparts bright yellow, washed bright orange across breast; back and tail bright olive green, tipped yellow.
Much smaller than Grey-headed Bush-Shrike, distinguished by lighter bill, yellow forehead and eyebrow, and reddish-brown (not pale yellow) eyes.
Juvenile: Head and face pale grey, lightly barred white. Underparts pale yellow, with only a faint tinge of orange.

Male: Mostly sooty black; bright scarlet breast, iridescent green throat and forecrown, and velvety blackish body unmistakable; no eclipse plumage. Immature male similar to female, but has mottled scarlet breast patch. Lacks pectoral tufts.
Female: Overall darker plumage, above greenish grey-brown; malar stripe buffy white; throat, breast and upper belly brown, mottled yellow. Whitish alula (shoulder edge) and lack of pale eyebrow separate it from female Amethyst Sunbird.
Juvenile: Like female, underparts yellower and barred rather than streaked. Gape whitish or pale yellow, turning orange then finally black. Sometimes with some green and red on throat and breast in male.
