Red-billed Oxpecker Buphagus erythrorhynchus
Identification
20 cm. Sexes similar. Iris yellow to red; eyering bright yellow; bill and inside of mouth scarlet. Build slender; tail somewhat pointed; upperparts, throat and breast brown, rump slightly paler (rump much paler in Yellowbilled Oxpecker), shading to creamy buff on rest of underparts; bill red (diagnostic; base yellow in Yellowbilled Oxpecker).
Juvenile: More sooty brown than adult; bill dark olive, yellowish in centre, later turning all dark; bill reddens at 4 months, fully red at 7 months; eye brown; adult plumage acquired at 6 months.
