058. Reed Cormorant Microcarbo africanus

Identification
55 cm; sexes alike, male larger than female. All dark; tail longish; bill and neck short; crest short; in good light broad black tips to scapulars and upperwing coverts visible; eye red; bill yellow with black culmen. Breeding plumage glossy black; bare yellow-­orange skin turns red during courtship. Non breeding adult overall paler and browner, whitish belly, eyes not as bright red.
Immature: Below off-white; browner above; long tail, short bill and small size distinguish it from Whitebreasted Cormorant.
Chick: Naked at first, then covered with jet black down.

055. White-breasted Cormorant Phalacrocorax lucidus

Identification
77-94 cm. Iris green; bill black above, tan below shading to black at tip. Plumage above black; white from chin to upper belly (extent of white somewhat variable); rest of underparts black; breeding birds usually have white thigh patches; non-breeding adults browner, and lack white thigh patches.
Juvenile: Dark brown above, off-white below. Chick: Naked black, then with sooty black down.
