Thanks, BC!
Section Rangers have been and are meant to be an unique breed, and to be one in Kruger has historically been the apex of achievement for most aspirant rangers for many decades.
This applies to aspirant field rangers, guides, students, and above all children, across the subcontinent.
The section ranger is far more than just a supervisor...he or she is an absolute pillar of strength, parent figure to many, judge and jury in extremely difficult circumstances regarding a wide range of issues regarding both staff and tourists, leader from the front, often highly qualified, always responsible, often working far longer hours than his or her subordinates, and having to attend regular meetings far beyond the scope of lower ranks.
Always respected..worldwide in the conservation community, in fact.
They are an extremely closely-knit brother/sisterhood, especially in these trying times....it is not for nothing that Big Tuskers have been named after them in Kruger over the years.
It is difficult to compare the level of a section ranger to a private company executive, or even one in another Parastatal. My best effort would be to say that if Kruger were a country, the section ranger would be the Premier of his or her province, responsible for a huge area of land, and a lot of people.
My point is it is shocking that this arrest should be sweepingly downplayed (And it is intentional) by SANParks as "just another Kruger employee" being arrested.
It is actually the absolute nadir so far regarding the whole sordid business going on in Kruger and SANParks at the moment, for reasons I shall explain shortly.
