Hippopotamus Hippopotamus amphibius

Estimated abundance in the Kruger Park: 3,100 (2008)
Status: CITES listing: Appendix II. IUCN listing: Vulnerable.
Mass: ♂ 1600-3200 kg; ♀ 650-2400 kg. Shoulder height: ♂ 1.4-1.7 m; ♀ 1.3-1.6 m.
Distinguishing features: The third largest land mammal. Large, barrel-shaped body, with short legs and tail. Huge head with a 50 cm-wide muzzle, which opens to 90-120 cm (150°), exposing long, pointed incisors and curved canines.
Life-span: ± 30 years.
Predators: Main predators are humans. Young fall prey to lion, spotted hyena, wild dog, leopard and crocodile.
Kruger Park distribution: Occur in ecozone H (Riverine communities) of the Kruger Park in perennial rivers and in permanent and semipermanent pools formed in seasonal rivers. Also found in large dams throughout the Park. The highest densities are found in the Olifants River.
