A hotel must be built in Kruger because some people from different cultures don't find staying in rondavels or sitting around a fire romantic, and would rather stay in a hotel.
What market research was done on "different cultures"? Why then have black overnight visitor numbers continued to increase over the past financial year?
This is according Glen Phillips, executive director of tourism and marketing of SANParks, on Saturday in Groenkloof, Pretoria, when he addressed concerns about the conservation organisation's plans to build a hotel in Skukuza.
He said two thirds of the park is threatened by land claims, and a hotel would attract people who could not previously visit the park. It would provide work, and communities who have land claims would benefit.
The land claims story is wearing thin, the standard terror message for over 5 years now. Land Claims have absolutely nothing to do with SANParks...there is a whole .gov department that is financed to deal with that. If Kruger must be justly turned over to communities, please let it happen immediately! Surely what's right is right? Please redress the injustices, instead of placating those entitled with the promise of a job here and there? How racist!
Phillips said: "We must utilise new markets, hence the need for the hotel. If we don't do it, the end will arrive for SANParks by 2022."
What happens in 2022? The Mayan calendar again? Please!
According to Phillips the government has allocated R240 million for the construction of hotels.
So if the money is there, for free, why is it expected to be believed that SP are on their own regarding generation of funds? Gov. pays them many millions every single year! And how long will it take to recoup a quarter of a billion from tourist funds? Actually closer to 300 million, the way things are going? Crazy!
SANParks has 22 reserves, and Kruger makes the most money. Only 4 of their parks can sustain themselves and break even, the rest cost money.
In the last year SANParks made an income of R1.4 billion, and had expenses of R1.7 billion.
According to SP's own financial statements, or at least one of them, they reported a surplus of almost R50 million in the last bookyear...

So someone is lying.
According to the consultant's preliminary research the hotel will open in June 2015. It will have 128 rooms and space for 256 guests.
According to any sane builder, especially with the holiday coming up, no hotel of this size can be ready for action from square one in 6 months.
The hotel is expected to be set up in the staff village at Skukuza. Only 48 of the park's staff will remain there. The rest, about 80, will have to live in villages outside the park.
Phillips allayed fears that SANParks plans six hotels for the park. "I assure you it's only two. It's the one in Skukuza and the one in Malelane, which will be a luxury tented camp. "
SP assured all and sundry that there were no plans for Shangoni Gate, for example, so nobody will hold their breath, I don't think, with all respect.
