Day 5 Part 2: Gannakouriep Camp
One last photo taken at 3 am at Tatasberg that I've missed posting:
Succulant plant growing in the Kokerboomkloof: The Sarcocaulon is a succulent belonging to the family of Geraniaceae, which consists in a dense spiny bush
Richtersveld NP is a bit different from other park in that they are allowing livestock and dogs in the park. We met a hiker and his dog at Kokerboomkloof campsite that was busy circumnavigating the park on foot. Most of the day they rested and at night walked from one camp to another when its cooler. They entered the park on the same day we entered it and on day 3 at Kokerboomkloof campsite. Luckily it was full moon from 7 pm to morning to help them seeing the road and getting the right directions.
Around lunch time we reached Gannakouriep camp with the sun high up and not giving much shade. We were a bit disappointed to find no curtains in both the bedroom and kitchen and had to improvise to get some sort of shade. The camp is within a rocky valley and the cabins consist of a kitchen on the left, walk though bathroom in the middle and bedroom on the right. Outside a little stoep luckily on the southern side where we tried to cool down the rest of the afternoon. The water is very salty at this camp and even more than KTP, so a shower leaves your skin salty. Best solution when the temperature is in the mid forties is to drink enough water. When booking here remember to ensure you have enough water. We thought we had enough cool drinks and in the end had to rely on the extra 15 liters of water we brought along.
Sunny bedroom - Can't believe no curtains with the sun beating down on the cabin for most of the day:
Late afternoon the clouds started moving in building u to a short thunderstorm just when the fire was ready to braai.
Gannakourieb camp TBC.
