3 and 4 ...Buzzard..probably Jackal ????

#4 looks like a young Jackal Buzzard, but #3 is a Steppe Buzzard.

Can you explain why, please? Because I had thought it to be a jackal buzzard as well.
Obviously I need to learn the difference

A Jackal Buzzard's wingtips extend past the tail when perched, for one thing.
And this bird just seems to have vulpinus written all over it!

#3 has a light eye ..does that not point to a young Jackal Buzzard ????

I take back everything I said about bird #3.

If bird #3 is indeed a Jackal Buzzard, it is a juvenile, and by that I mean it is in its first plumage.
Raptors of the World describes the juvenile plumage of the Jackal Buzzard as being tinged with rufous, which this bird certainly is!

Michele - the 2 buzzards, whatever they may be were taken on April 22 and 25, 2016.

It just helps to know when the birds have been seen as the Steppe migrates but the Jackal doesn't. But to confuse the matter some Steppes overwinter here....
From my research....
The Steppe Buzzard is a Palearctic breeding migrant, leaving its breeding grounds in September and early October then heading south to southern Africa, arriving in the period from late October-November. It eventually departs from the region in late February and March.
So from the above we can presume that Steppes have left SA by the end of April...but with birding you cannot presume anything....

I just give up when it comes to Steppe & Jackal Buzzards. Down here it's get even more confusing as we have the Forest and Mystery Buzzard to add to the confusion. The Mystery Buzzard being a hybrid between the Steppe and the Forest Buzzards - or so they think. :) :)

This one is a toughie... I checked for the juvenile jackal buzzard as I think it must be a buzzard (or a harrier) due to the lack of booted legs.
That's why I think it can't be an African hawk-eagle as nan suggested although the head and plumage certainly looks very similar to one.
