Thanks everyone for the positive discussion regarding injured wildlife.

In this case we couldn't see any external injuries so suspected it merely had a concussion, which it would recover from no worries given time. The problem was just that we couldn't intervene to help it, and it was in the middle of the road. The real threat to it at that point was cars. Even moving it off the side of the road and into the grass would have probably been enough.

In such a situation we normally pick up the bird, pop it into a dark cardboard box where it is stimulus-free, and let it recover for a little while. Generally when you open up the box later the bird is alert and ready for release. \O

It went against all our instincts to drive away and leave it in such a vulnerable state. :-(

Thanks again everyone for following along.

Thursday 24/8/17 - Olifants to Lower Sabie continued

We stopped in at Satara to grab some lunch and searched one last time for the Scops Owl. Sadly we couldn't find it. This was pretty devastating as I had promised Lyca before the trip that it was a certainty. --00-- O/

While looking for the Owl a fellow tourist informed us that he had just seen sleeping Lions to the south. We didn't have to travel far down the H1-3 before we found the vehicle gathering that almost always indicated Lions. Nobody seemed able to see them though, and we were not super excited about hanging around to get a glimpse of a tail or mane through the long grass, so we pressed on south.

The Magpie Shrikes were struggling to cope with the strong winds and were probably ruing their beautiful yet totally impractical tails.

Further on a Koorhan posed nicely on the road.

We detoured to Nkaya Pan to see if it still held water. It certainly did, so we parked off for a few minutes to enjoy the atmosphere.

The sightings continued to improve on the run down to Tshokwane. There was good general game at the dams, plenty of Elephants and a few Buffalo and Giraffe along the riverine sections, but surprisingly no cats. Also, as the afternoon progressed the light just got better and better for photography! \O
