The eyes look like gemstones

Very clever as always. It makes me want spring to come in a hurry ( that I do anyway) and go out and study some of those incredible creatures O\/ O\/

How close do you have to be to get photos like those?

Thanks for staying aboard this insect/spider infested TT bus, all. O-/ O-/ O0

Sis: "How close do you have to be to get photos like those?"

You have to get very close to the subject to get a detailed crisp picture and not have to resort to a lot of cropping. Of course the size of the object will dictate the distance needed to fill the lens, but my 100mm Macro lens cannot focus closer than about 6 inches from the subject without extension tubes, which allows you to get closer. Six inches, or even more, away from the subject is fine for larger insects like robber flies.

The real problem is approaching that close without scaring them away, so I usually get on the ground, maybe 3 feet away, get the camera into position so there is minimal movement needed as I move in closer and closer. Or I just position myself somewhere and see what comes my way.

(The tricky part is that they are moving, you are moving, the Earth is spinning, and the Universe is expanding, all at the same time!) :-?

..0.. You should make macro your new hobby! [O]

My back does not allow me to lie on the stomach, so I would only be able to take pics of creepy crawlies living on the underside of the leaves lol ........not that there are not lots there too =O:
