Thanks for the comments and compliments RP, Nan, Sprocky, Jillinflorida, PRWIN, Flutterby, Lisbeth, Mel & Leachy. \O

RP, not dirty. Big males are this colour. The darker areas are the black skin showing through the grizzled fur. \O I'll dig out size info in a bit.

Nan, He was a magnificent animal. \O

Sprocky, I wouldn't have messed with this guy either. =O:

Jill, Later on in the trip. =O:

PRWIN, it's a different beast when not in a Zoo, same as any predator, but make great subjects to photograph nevertheless. \O I liked the pics you got last time. \O

Flutts, Got to keep my animals poking tongues out pics reputation up. =O: I'll spoil you all a bit more in a moment or two.....

Lis, I got a lot more than I'd hoped for. \O

Mel, It gets betterer. -O

Leachy, without the animals being so good to us, Mats, our guide and the Captain & crew of the ship, I doubt we would have got such good views. I've read of other trips that missed out on seeing them altogether, or maybe only the odd one or two at a distance. We were fortunate, very fortunate. \O

Brown Bear. Head & body 150 - 200 cm. Shoulder height 150 cm. Weight 130 - 550 kg, rarely up to 725 kg. Females 80 - 250 kg, rarely up to 340 kg.

The big male lay down on the ice for a while, probably assessing the situation.

Image

Risk assessment over, he made his decision and came over to check us out.

Image

He was a magnificent specimen, even if he was a little grizzled. I think that added to his character somewhat.

Image

Did he just wink at me? =O:

Image

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd get head shots like this.

Image

Image

After making sure that there was no profit in being near us any longer, he turned and sauntered away with a leisurely gait.

Image

Image

Those paws were huge. Larger than dinner plates. You could just see and feel the power in this animal.

Image

What an amazing encounter.

Up next, more of the same I'm afraid............
