That's a lot of wild dogs

Strange that they do not take the calf at the throat like the cats. It would be much more effective -O-

Apparently not.
I was reading in my "Beat About the Bush - Mammals".
Carnaby was discussing cat killing (throat strangulation) v other predators (dogs, hyena) that just keep bighting their prey which eventually bleeds to death. Carnaby says that although the dog method may seem cruel, the prey goes into shock quickly and doesn't feel much. Whereas with the cat method, it can sometimes take over an hour for the prey to succumb during which it is fully conscious of what is going on.

..They kill as a pack ..Lions will individually go for the throat and often the others start feeding before death
