..Today's situation where I work and all the other Cos where I have worked since 1971 ..My Son and his wife and my first grandchild who I havent seen yet are arriving at 16h00 this afternoon from Qatar after being away for 4 years because labour laws prevented them from applying for jobs. My Boss in JHB phoned me on Friday said that he would be in PE today and would like to make a couple of calls with me this afternoon. I told him I would be leaving for the Airport at 15h00 to fetch my family ..He said thats fine and promptly emailed me a leave form ..If I dont sign it ...FIRED ..its that simple ..Socialism doesnt work especially in Africa...I dont get overtime its like all the American Cos I have worked for
too in the past like IBM and on the post 65 yrs old arrangement I have with them I get less than these strikers ,,SA get back to work and be thankful

I do way more hours than what I am "supposed to". Don't get paid extra for it. But I don't strike either.
Am grateful I have a job.

Peter & Dzombo, I get what you're saying. But if it's in their contract that they get paid for overtime, and then don't get paid, well that's just wrong! O**

Flutterby, I agree with you, if it is in your contract then the employer must obey. A few days ago this appeared on the sanparks tender site - SANParks-0069-11-19: RFQ - Investigation on the Escalation of Overtime Costs South African National Parks (SANParks) is hereby inviting professional service providers to submit a quotation for an investigation on the escalation of overtime costs in the organisation.

Seems like there is a real issue at hand

Yes, Philip. Overtime is unfortunately a regularly-abused "institution" in SA government departments, with tasks that should be completed during normal hours being prolonged or even sabotaged so that overtime is enforced. Or the books can simply be fiddled so that a worker gets overtime pay while the supervisor takes a cut... O**
