Re: Addo 2019

I'm surprised to see so many hyenas in one spot at Addo! Never thought they'd all pile up.
You hardly get to see them in the park.

And a successor to the immortal Valli

God put me on earth to accomplish a certain amount of things. Right now I'm so far behind that I'll never die.

Re: Addo 2019
We took a trip in to Addo last weekend and did a sneaky early morning manoeuvre up to the main camp entrance... the public road which crosses the middle of Addo is open for transit at any time, whereas you can only get into the park at the main entrances from 7am as a day visitor. So we arrived at the Paterson gate at about 6am and took a slow cruise over to the Addo town side to then swing up to the main camp entrance to get our day permits.
It was a good decision as we managed to see 3 hyena near Arizona along the way

There were other distant sightings of elephant, secretary bird, zebra, red hartebeest, eland and jackal but just a bit far off for pics.
Once in at the main camp we took the road to Domkrag dam where some people were saying they could hear lions roaring in various directions. From there it could have even come from the Nyathi side, but a few cars were gathering a little further along the loop so we headed that way and sure enough lion had been spotted. They weren't exactly visible... quite far off on a hillside and pretty much flopped behind bushes
We decided to carry on round the loop to check out Rooidam to see whether the hyena clan there was out and about, but as we got round the other side of the loop we could clearly see one of the lions was up, so we had to backtrack to go check out what was happening. It was Jack & Jill, with Jill busy hunting some kudu. By the time we got back she had just missed a kudu, and was heading back not far from the road

There was a certain amount of intent in her eyes... this girl was certainly hungry

As there was nothing too close to grab her hunting attention she parked off for a bit

She caught sight of some more kudu further up the road so we decided to move into a place that would hopefully provide a view of any chase. It took ages (or so it seemed) before she got up, but she was definitely in stalking mode

There were a lot of kudu in a few different herds and although she was in fairly good cover, they were a bit far away to attempt anything

One of the herds that came from a different direction spotted her and after lots of snorting pretty much all the kudu ran round the side of her. A herd of zebra was also heading her way and they seemed oblivious to the kudu's calls so trundled along to a small pan for a drink. Jill got impatient and decided that was the time to strike, but she was still too far away

The mass of kudu & zebra went charging off right at the bottom of the hill where Jack was still snoozing. All those hooves woke him up at least!

He wandered down to his sister whilst roaring every so often

It had been a fun morning parking off with the lions. We covered a fair chunk of the rest of the park but not much was happening to be honest. After a bit of rain (the park still needs a lot more) some pans must have filled enough to keep the herds of elephant away from the main waterholes.
