As always, I hope that there were no rhinos involved.

Anti-poaching arrests four in KNP
The Kruger National Park (KNP) anti-poaching fighters upped their game even more during the past few days, leading to the arrest of four suspected poachers and the fatal shooting of two more.

This occurred during three separate anti-poaching operations in the KNP.

In the first incident, Ike Phaahla, general manager of communications, confirmed that Pretoriuskop rangers conducting follow-up operations made contact with a group of three suspected poachers during the early morning on Thursday.

“During the contact, one suspect was arrested, but the other two managed to escape.”

He confirmed that a third suspect was apprehended during two separate anti-poaching incidents in the Pretoriuskop section.

In the second incident, the rangers performed a nocturnal counter and follow-up operation and made contact with a group of three suspected poachers just before midnight.

“During the contact, two of the suspects were fatally wounded and the third managed to escape under the cover of darkness. A fully loaded, heavy-calibre firearm, ammunition and poaching equipment were recovered from the suspects. Follow-up investigations relating to both the incidents are currently
under way.”

In an operation that started in the Tshokwane Section on December 14 and ended up in a joint operation in Lower Sabie Section, rangers from both sections as well as those from the Crocodile Bridge Section supported by the K9, aviators and rapid air response, managed to arrest two of three suspected rhino poachers.

A heavy calibre firearm, ammunition and equipment were also recovered during the operation.

Seven suspected rhino poachers arrested in KNP
Three high-calibre rifles and poaching equipment were also confiscated during these anti-poaching operations over the past nine days.

“SANParks is happy to announce a great start to the anti-poaching campaign of 2020,” confirmed Ike Phaahla, GM of communications at the Kruger National Park (KNP).

He added that rangers, supported by the K9 unit and airwing rapid response units, arrested seven rhino poaching suspects during the past nine days in various anti-poaching operations.

The first three suspects were arrested on January 2 in the Skukuza/Lower Sabie area. The second group, also three suspects, was arrested five days later in the Pretoriuskop and Stolsnek area during another operation.

The seventh suspect was arrested on January 9 in the Thsokwane area.

“The entire SANParks team was congratulated by the chief executive officer,” Phaahla said.

He urged neighbouring communities to assist SANParks by providing information on those intending to poach animals in the KNP.

“All seven suspects have been handed over to the police for further investigation, and will appear in court in due course to face the consequences of rhino poaching.”

Police have arrested four suspected poachers in KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested four suspected rhino poachers.

The suspects were nabbed during a multidisciplinary and joint operation by police officers in Hluhluwe and Mtubatuba, after a tip off that the suspects were from Khula Village in Matubatuba to Dukuduku.

On stopping and searching the vehicle, officers found a rifle, binoculars, ammunition, a home-made silencer and cellphones.

The suspects – who are aged between 22 and 24 – were arrested and charged for being in illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

"They will appear in court soon. Investigations are also underway to establish if they are linked to other crimes in the area," said police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele.
