the mating ritual of, what i believe to be,
a wood sandpiper....
.
to begin with he pursues his chosen one
for quite some time
until she lands on the water
he then hovers above her
and proceeds to dunk her head under the water
as if it is some sort of pre-copulation baptism
he then impresses her with his part of their
pas de deux
and then......
Interesting or Unusual Behaviour
Re: Interesting or Unusual Behaviour
he then
proceeds with the task
after which he
gives her a big wave...
goodbye and then leaves......

Re: Interesting or Unusual Behaviour
No courtship displays??? Sandpiper ladies are choosy and competition is fierce - how did he persuade the lady?
Or is this the new trend in doing courtship?
Wood Sandpiper is a summer migrant and would breed in cold Europe, so they do all this for fun only
Thank you for sharing this, love it, leachy (but it should be in the bird behaviour section)

Re: Interesting or Unusual Behaviour
So what is going on there? Is that fighting over the best feeding spot?
Anyone with a plausible interpretation?
