Why can't they just at least use an existing dirt road...not necessarily a tourist one?
I can't quite picture 50 cyclists leaving little impression on game trails "if available"...
BTW I checked, and the only mountain bike trail in Kruger is still Olifants after all, but it does not seem to be hyper-popular...the bicycles are out of order at the moment..."Maybe December"...

I wonder if there is a EMP to be done, to mitigate the environmental impact

I do not understand what they want to obtain (money of course, but from which source?) Fill up the road along the way with cars from which you can see nothing? And from where would they be arriving? Uppington?
Sponsors? It is not exactly "Tour de France"
Attract attention to KTP? Only the ones who already knows about the park will be interested.......I think and the ones who care, will certainly not be there
Next step is tar roads and more roads crossing the river beds. We already know about the planned accommodations

Love the funeral march, Lisbeth! Funny lady.
As I commented on http://ow.ly/erOZI where you can also see many other impassioned comments on this issue:
Am I being dense, but is the argument that this will be a 'cycle trail' and not a 'race' really relevant? Does it really address the issues? I would prefer to see scientific evidence from an independent study of how much/little effect the 'trail' will have on the environment, plants, animals, etc.

Re: Riverbed cycle challenge in Kgalagadi
IF they call it a cycle trail, in could mean that they will repeat the race every year or even leave it as such I know, terrible speculation, but with sanparks you never know

I think one needs to distinguish between the activities such as wilderness trails, 4x4 trails, bush walks, night drives and what not mentioned in the same breath as this thing...even the small mountain bike trail in Kruger.....
Those things are expressly designed to bring tourists more into contact with nature on a different level, and are pretty low-key.
This thing is not that...it is unnecessary in a National Park.

Re: Riverbed cycle challenge in Kgalagadi
My only question is :
Will we as passengers in a car then be allowed to get out of our cars? or should we cart a frame with so we don't appear on the "shame-list'
I have seen cyclists in some parks around our area....
it is WRONG to make animals that tame, or if they do attack people, to then kill them - or remove them from the park.
Lions come to mind... and what about hyenas.... what about black rhino... and ellies !!!
Or they will start putting fences !!!
It will become a glorified zoo! In my own opinion. (0)
