KZN South Coast Hibiscus Route

There are many whales passing every day but they are further out at sea than normal. This may have to do with the very heavy rains that we had a few months ago where rivers discharged huge amounts of water into the sea which has most likely altered the deeper channels closer to shore. Here are 4 photos of a few whales taken yesterday but it is very difficult photographing them as they only appear very briefly and are quite far from shore.

When is the calf season in your stretch of the coast?

KS, the annual whale northern migration reaches this part of the coast late May or early June. They swim north and calve in the Mozambique area after which they return south. Their northern migration here lasts until about mid July and their southern migration ends at about the end of October. It is really a wonderful time of the year.

Here are two photos of larger than normal waves here yesterday. This occurs a few times a year during abnormal weather patterns.

I noticed a few whales swimming south yesterday returning from the warm Mozambique waters where they calve annually. This should continue for another two months or so.
