Bird Identification

Post by Toko »

This is the place to ask for identification. Please post your pictures here and add location and date of the sighting. Please do only one bird per post and put up all the views you have.

Interesting photos of identified species will be added to the Africa Wild bird book or the bird topics here on our forum.

And do please comment here and help other members to identify their birds!

Adult Grey-headed KF has a chestnut belly and all red bill. Grey head and mantle (sometimes very pale).

Juvenile has grey-barred head and underparts (lacks streaking on head and flanks) and a more blackish bill, looks like this

A brown-hooded KF adult fem. and juv. has a brownish head streaked with black.

You have it as a Brown-hooded here

viewtopic.php?p=364851#p364851

All age-classes of Brown-hooded and Striped KFs have a brown-streaked crown, the crown of the juvenile Grey-headed KF has light transverse brown barring.

0/* nan, I changed your entry on the KTP challange topic, same score points (100) for Brown-hooded and Grey-headed KF, so the challenge does not require any updates.

Very difficult to ID, as there is no sign of a walnut belly nor is the bill blackish. Moreover the wings are brown and not black. Not only, also the KTP is out of range. I have however found a couple of photos on the internet looking more or less like Nan's pic and IDed as grey-headed KF.

The barring and the not streaked crown are the give-away.

The bill and wing and belly coloration is maybe variable due to subspecies or populations - the older bird books don't differentiate these characters.

Both species are out of range, but the Brown-hooded more so lol
