If the police do not cooperate, it is worth nothing and IMO the police is not to be trusted O**

Meeting addresses crime on Numbi Road

Cameras, more police officers and private security patrols to be placed on the Numbi Road.

Following a spate of attacks on tourists on the road leading to the Kruger National Park’s Numbi Gate, a possible breakthrough has been made following a recent meeting with various stakeholders.

Linda Grimbeek, COO of the KLCBT, said the meeting was held with all the security personnel in the area, tribal authorities, MTPA and SANParks on Thursday April 7, to come up with solutions to fight tourist attacks in the area.

Cameras, more police officers and private security patrols to be placed on the Numbi Road, were some of the measures that were discussed. “Installing cameras on the road to monitor the area that will operate 24 hours a day will help the security and police to identify some of the criminals who attack tourists or ordinary people in the area. The police in Masoyi have also agreed to increase the number of patrols, and the private security companies will also assist to curb crime in the area,” she said.

“Closing the Numbi Gate will not solve the issue of crime, because some of the community members benefit from the tourists going to the KNP who use the gate. The area has over 80% youth unemployment, which is a big concern. We need to address the issue of how to come up with job opportunities, because that will also assist in decreasing crime, since implementing all these safety measures and ignoring the main source of the problem is useless,” said Grimbeek.

Capt Nanikie Nonyane, the spokesperson for Masoyi Police Station, confirmed that more officers will be deployed. They also pleaded with tourists who were attacked to press charges. “More officers will be deployed to patrol the area. We are worried about reports regarding a high number of tourist attacks on the Numbi Road, but according to our system, we have only had three cases in the past three months. We plead with tour guides or anyone who was attacked to come and open a case so that it can be investigated,” she said.

Nonyane also said they had had an incident in which some of the tourists who had been attacked had refused to press charges.

Meanwhile, the KNP and MTPA, in a joint statement, welcomed the initiatives that have been put in place for all tourism stakeholders to collaborate and work together for the safety of tourists.

I hope that the police is better there than the ones I had to do with in Johannesburg. I had to call them and make them come to the hospital, in order to open a case, because I needed it for the insurance. I am sure that they never took another look at it again apart from the ones, cops, who tried to blackmail me.

I spoke to someone the other day who said a senior security person had told them police are very often stealing alongside criminals!

But this is a good attempt by SANParks, which shows you they are important stakeholders and can demand! :ty:

Yes. because it is not only about Numbi gate. When people hear about hijacking at a gate, they just don't go, whatever the gate.

If Roger is right, why do they remove a post like this? It is simply facts, not an opinion O/

Hi-Tech Security will patrol Numbi Road

April 30, 2022
Tumelo Waga Dibakwane

The KLCBT has secured R2.4m to hire a private security patrol to curb criminal activities committed against tourists on the Numbi Road.

The KLCBT chief operating officer, Linda Grimbeek, said it had already finalised the contract with the funders. Hi-Tech Security has been appointed to assist the police with patrols for 12 months, the company will receive R200 000 a month.

“The initiative is part of the stakeholders’ intervention to fight crime in the area, especially tourist attacks. Our plan is to make sure that the gate remains open, because closing it will not solve the problem. Instead, it will affect businesses that are benefiting in the area. We believe that this intervention will assist the tourism sector and the community as a whole,” she said.

The spokesperson for Masoyi Police Station, Capt Nanakie Nonyane, said they welcome the initiative since they have a shortage of police officials. The station is prepared to work with Hi-Tech and provide it with the support needed.

“We are all aware that the country has a shortage of police officers. Our station is also affected, so with the security guards patrolling the area, it will assist us a lot. This precaution will not only protect tourists, it will also benefit the community,” Nonyane said.

She said the traffic police have come on board to assist in patrolling the area and the Kruger National Park has also deployed some of its security guards too.

The perpetrators who recently attacked Melani de Beer, two Germans and Lourens Harmese in separate incidents on the Numbi Road have not been arrested yet.

“We appeal to members of the public with information that may lead to the arrest of the perpetrators, to come forward,” Nonyane said.
