The hyenas were still active at least most of them

Image

so there was always something to be seen,

Image

on top as already said the morning light was still simply perfect,

Image

for sure the prize never changed its owner

Image

and we even had luck with a woodland kingfisher paying a visit.

Image

Some hyenas were also thirsty but must say also that water looked already extreme green and after we stood there already for more than half an hour we carried on and thought that our stay at that waterhole was over but we were wrong

Image

because after we also stopped for a red backed shrike

Image

and more common waxbills

Image

we again met old friends.......wild dogs.......

Image

Followed by one car in the beginning Timon drove backwards but he suddenly turned around as he was more than sure that the wild dogs are on the way to visit the waterhole which was not far so we nearly took no pictures and were first at the waterhole before after a while the pack charged out of the bushes right into the direction of the hyenas who in fact were surprised but stayed where they where

Image

and the wild dogs finally quenched their thirst.

whilst nearly lying in the water.

Image

Image

Here you can see the wild dogs on the left side of the waterhole and the hyenas on the right side

Image

I lost sight of the hyeanas with the prey they must have ran behind us into a bush and others at first sight withdrew a bit but some were standing on the rock in the middle of the waterhole and hold the fort.

Image

Image

As we already got that many shots from the hyenas we first concentrated on the wild dogs who got more and more relaxed

Image

Image

and luckily also stayed at the waterhole,

Image

some even laid down either right on the grass or close to the water

Image

and also we get prepaired for another longer stay at the waterhole

Image

so we switched from wild dogs to hyenas

Image

and were after a while even surrounded by other cars and even OSV’s

Image

but the many cars never disturbed either the wild dogs nor the hyenas who never moved away from the rock.

Image

So this was now part Two of our very best waterhole sighting and same was not yet over as we were eager to get some shots of the interaction of the both species.

to be continued...............................

Wow Wow Wow, Pumbaa! ^Q^ ^Q^ ^Q^

What an astounding session, great sightings at my favourite place! O/\

The light is indeed superb, as you say!

And what a conglomeration of hyenas! :-0

Neither species is afraid of water there, it seems they know no crocs! \O

Well first both species stayed in their corners the hyenas close to the famous rock

Image

Image

and the wild dogs on the left edge of the waterhole eying suspiciously each other from the safe distance.

Image

Image

It took not that long and the curiosity on both sides won and at least one member of each species approached,

Image

soon more of the wild dogs got interested in the hyenas

Image

and at least in number the wild dogs were predominant as most of the hyenas we still saw earlier that morning had moved under bushes but the ones close to the rock never gave up same to the wild dogs.

Image

Image

Not all of the wild dogs were in the mood for trouble and instead enjoyed a morning nap or a sun bath although must say the higher the sun got the hotter it got.

Image

Sorry once again about the number of pictures but it was extreme hard again to choose the favourites as we took so many of them and that sighting was simply amazing

Image

meanwhile also that sighting must have got around as the come and go with cars and OSV’s got more but luckily everyone behaved and all had the best view onto that spectacle.

Image

Two against one

and we still noticed inidivudal dogs here and there who were not interested in the hyenas

Image

must say that the size of each specie compared to each other is more than impressive.

Image

Image

After another 45 minutes we finally got our interactive shots and it was more than hard to drag ourselves away

Image

but after finally both species mingled enough between each other

Image

they again returned to their buddies but still stayed at the waterhole

Image

and we had the intention in returning again to that spot after we had paid Crocodile Bridge Camp another visit still hoping that at least something will still be hanging around.

Image

We drove straight to Duke’s waterhole and noticed there a couple of circling vultures,

Image

more on a tree close to Duke’s but as presently nothing else was around we carried on

Image

and were lucky in finding another burchell’s coucal.

Image

Lots of marabu storks could be seen here and there

Image

and along the S28 general game in form of warthogs, giraffes, wildebeests as well as zebras could be admired.

Image

to be continued................................
