A Butterfly Mystery in Kruger 🦋🌍

Something unusual is happening in Kruger this morning.

Normally, the brown-veined white butterflies follow their well-known dispersion route from west to east, eventually reaching Madagascar. However, today, they are moving in the exact opposite direction, east to west, following the sun.

Some call this a "migration" but it’s actually a dispersal, meaning there’s no return journey. These butterflies keep moving forward, laying eggs along the way, and eventually dying.

This wasn’t limited to one small area! It was seen from Berg-en-Dal all the way to Skukuza, making for a strange and fascinating experience. And it’s not just in the park, on my way back home, through the township and town, every single butterfly was flying northwest, exactly the opposite of their usual direction.

Could this be an anomaly in their usual pattern? A shift in environmental cues? Or perhaps a cyclone coming up? What could be influencing this unusual movement? Thoughts from the community?

Gerrie from Kruger Gateway Safaris tinged this incredible phenomenon while on a drive this morning!
