Re: Mopani Rest Camp
From the SANParks - Kruger National Park FB page
Social Media Alert: Temporary Closure of Mopani Rest Camp
Guests are hereby informed that Mopani Rest Camp will be temporarily closed from 19 – 23 May 2025 due to controlled prescribed burns which will be taking place inside the Camp.
Facilities such as filling station, park shop and restaurant (with limited option of take-away) will however be operational for guests who will pass by during that period.
Mopani Rest Camp is part of the Savanna biome, within the Kruger National Park (KNP) and this landscape is dependent on fires to
maintain a healthy ecosystem. Veldfires are a natural and common phenomenon in KNP, and the park uses fire as a land
management tool. Mopani Rest Camp is a fenced off area within KNP and therefore fuel reduction within the camp is very limited due to no grazing.
The subsequent build-up of fuel material (grass) in the camp for a few years increases the fire risk to people and infrastructure in the camp. Due to the size of the camp, manual removal of grass is not feasible and therefore, burning early season fires to remove the moribund and dead grass that has accumulated over time is the recommended method to reduce the fire risk in the camp and ensure the safety for people and infrastructure.
The temporary closure of the camp for a limited period is a proactive measure put in place to allow KNP trained staff to undertake these controlled prescribed burns in a safe manner with minimum impact and discomfort to our guests and their Kruger experience. Thereby ensuring that the risk of fires later in the year during the hot, drier and windy winter months from July to October, is substantially reduced within the camp.
