Our spot for this month is S 39 - Timbavati Road & Picnic Spot

An alternative return route to Satara [from Orpen] would be take the rather long detour through to Timbavati picnic site on the S39. Leeubron water hole, on the way, is often packed with a good deal of game, but other than that, this road offers sparse viewing opportunities.
This is the "secret waterhole" at the end of the unsignposted track. From Goedgegun waterhole [the S39] becomes a very pretty route with fair numbers of game.
Look out for an unsignposted narrow track on the right (coming from the H1-4). The track does not appear to lead anywhere at first, but after a while a magnificent pool appears, overlooked by a sheer cliff. To date I have seen only waterbuck drink here, although judging by spoor in the parking area, elephant and rhino utilise the pool regularly as well.
Continuing south on the S39, herds of zebra, wildebeest and impala are often present at the open, heavily grazed area in the vicinity of Roodewal water hole. After passing the turnoff to Roodewal Private Camp, some fine herds of kudu may be seen, and leopard sightings are often reported from this area. Further along, you will reach the Piet Grobler Dam. This is a large area of water and there appear to be a few places where concentrations of game drink. Hippo are present in the dam, and a recently constructed hide is well situated in order to appreciate the view.
