Namibian Birds

Some photos of various bird species seen on our recent trip to Namibia.

Although we saw quite a number of species throughout the trip, I did not get as many photos as I normally manage on a trip, but at least I got some that were new to me.

First up is Burchell's Courser Cursorius rufus

We saw this one on the roadside between Rietfontein and Halali, along with a Temminck's Courser Cursorius temminckii, (which I will post next).

A nomadic species that I'd long wanted to see, so it was great to finally catch up with one so close to the roadside.

This Temminck's Courser Cursorius temminckii, was close by the Burchell's and at first glance, we thought it was a young Burchell's until we saw the crown colouration and the underbelly pattern.

It also has a design on the wings that the other one does not have, which makes it more interesting

Another species I caught up with on this trip was Rüppell's parrot Poicephalus rueppellii.

I found their regular roosting trees and saw them every morning and evening in the same spot. Trying to photograph them was another matter entirely though.

Here a pair take in the morning sun and preen before heading off to feed.
