Browns in Kruger - August 2016 (JHB Clan)

Hi All;

Another year gone by and again it's taken almost a year to get down to writing out 2016 TR. Here is our August 2016 Kruger trip report.

And again, the whole family was together for the trip ad we were staying down South for the whole trip
The plan for the holiday was:

Day 1: Lower Sabie
Days 2 to 6: Skukuza
Days 7 and 8: Berg en Dal

13th August 2016 - Day 1: Johannesburg to Lower Sabie

As Lower Sabie was our camp for the first night, it was a straight drive along the N4 to Crocodile Bridge and up the H4-2 to Lower Sabie. The H4-2 had all the general game that we were used to seeing on the way up to Lower Sabie






We had a BD2 booked for Roxy and Kelly and the rest of us were in the FU4V. On arrival at our unit we were greeted by an elephant herd at the fence.



There were many babies..



And so not everyone was pleased to see us arriving



After unpacking we took a short afternoon drive up the H4-1 to get into the spirit of things to come. The drive was quiet, it seemed to be one of those days when everything disappears off the H4-1.








During the evening braai we were visited by a hyena who was quite relaxed, not really interested in prowling the fence line but happy to sleep and smell the meat cooking.







Actually, looked very much like my fat staffie, same frown lines



The day ended with Cailin and the hyena posing together

Day 2 – 14th August 2016

We were up early as this was the first full day in the park, got a picture of the sun rising over the Lower Sabie dam.



We all gathered at the FU4V for early morning Coffee and Tea before heading out.





The plan was to go for a short morning drive down the S28 to Dukes waterhole and back to pack for the move to Skukuza. Jjust after turning on to the S28 we had a huge Elie approaching



It was not a happy Ellie, so we moved on before any confrontation.


At the turn off to Nthandanyathi we found about 8 Hyena busy scouting the area, it looked as if two groups were trying to occupy the same den and there was not enough room for all





Lots of running around and noise making but no real action







Eventually one group made tracks and all settled down again.





On the S137 Just after Dukes waterhole we found 2 male lions warming up in the morning sun.





They were not moving soon, so we enjoyed the sighting for about 15 minutes before heading back to Lower Sabie to pack for our move to Skukuza.

That accommodation looks quite nice, I must say...how is it laid out?

Is that the boy with the girl name again? You must get him to pick up the beer bottles before he goes to bed!

I like all the hyena...interesting behaviour by the clan/s!

@RP, the FU4V is similar to the GC4V at Skukuza, 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom.

Day 2 – 14th August 2016 (Continued)

After packing we headed off to Skukuza, we were still in the two-day lull where the H4-1 goes quiet, so we took it easy and enjoyed the drive.



Before the N’Watimhiri Causeway we found a lioness and cubs that were very interested in watching an Ellie have a sandbath





We booked in at Skukuza and relaxed during the quiet over the midday period. For the afternoon drive we went east along the H11 to Kruger Gate (avoiding the H4-1) and stopped at Lake Panic for a few photos









We still had time so decided to try the H4-1 again, down to Nkuhlu, but no luck, it was still in a lull, we would have to try our luck up north the next day.
