Identification
49 cm; sexes alike. Very distinctive all-grey bird.
Juvenile: Paler than ad with shorter crest and buffy tinge to feathers.

Identification
13 cm; sexes alike. Buffy underparts and flanks and rufous wing panel. Non-breeding birds have horn-coloured bills.
Juvenile: Tinged lemon yellow below; bill yellowish.

Identification

Beeding male: Face mask most commonly black but may be white, surrounded by yellowish or pink band.
Non-breeding male: Bright head features turn brown; throat white, bill remains red.
Female: Similar to non-breeding male, but bill and eye-ring dull yellow in br season.
Juvenile: Like adult female, bill horn brown.
