26–30 cm. Black, long, extremely decurved bill (not red), legs and feets black. Black plumage which in perfect light looks purple glossed. White spotted primaries form a white bar but without an additional white spot (contra some Wood Hoopoes).

50 cm.
Adult male: The crown is grey. The red crest is rarely visible except on displaying male. Upper parts are brown; feathers have black centres and white chevron marks. The foreneck is grey. The underparts are black except for white patches on each side of the upper breast. The eyes are pale, the bill dark horn and the legs and feet are off-white to grey-green.
Adult female: Similar to the male, but the crown is brown with white flecks, and the neck and upper breast are buff with black flecks, grading to a broad white breast band.

Identification
A dabbling duck. 43–48 cm long, the combination of a dark cap, pale buffy cheeks and red bill is diagnostic. Black cap and nape, pale face, and bright red bill. The body plumage is a dark brown edged with white. The secondary flight feathers are buff with a black stripe across them.
The sexes are similar, but juveniles are duller than adults.
