Kruger National Park Mammal Challenge - Battle of the Sexes

KNP Mammal Challenge - Battle of the Sexes

The KNP mammal challenge will follow the same format as the KNP bird challenge - a team effort...Ladies vs Gents!! Image

Each poster will receive points for their contributions, and those points will go towards the team score...ladies or gents! ;-) Anyone can join in at any time, but, best to start nagging your fellow gender-members!! \O

You can start posting pics here of any mammal found in the Kruger Park and the mods will assist and move your pic into the relevant post.

Rules:
1. The pic must be taken in the Kruger Park.
2. You can only score points once for each single species. You may post pics of male/female/juveniles, but points will only be awarded for the first pic. See check list below.
3. Bonus points will be awarded for multiple species in one photo - the more species in one photo, the more points. See below for the bonus points.
4. Please specify where in Kruger the pic was taken. You are also welcome to add anything interesting about the mammal. There is a separate thread for comments and discussions.
5. Mammals incorrectly identified will not receive points.
6. Please post only one species per post. Any photo will do as we are not judging the quality of the photo but the uniqueness of the mammal.

An index will be added later as we continue with the listings.

The prize is to have fun with the challenge but obviously the team with the most points wins!! O/\ O/\

Sable Antelope - 80 Points

Post by Toko »

Sable Antelope Hippotragus niger

Estimated abundance in the Kruger Park: 290 (2009)
Status: not endangered.
Mass: ♂ 200-270 kg; ♀ 190-230 kg. Shoulder height: ♂ 1.2-1.6 m; ♀ 1-1.4 m.
Distinguishing features: Black and white facial mask, a dark brownish-black face, with a white patch over the muzzle, mouth, chin and lower jaw; and a white patch extending from the base of the horns through the eyes down the cheeks and on to the mouth. Ears fringed with white.
Life-span: ± 15 years.
Predators: Young fall prey to lion, leopard, wild dog, crocodile and spotted hyena.
Kruger Park distribution: Found in suitable habitat in ecozones A (Mixed bushwillow woodlands), B (Sourveld), C (Malelane Mountain bushveld), D (Thorn thickets), F (Knobthorn/marula savanna), J (Thorn veld on basalt), N (Sandveld communities), O (Tree mopane savanna) and P (Mopane/bushwillow woodlands) of the Kruger Park. The highest population densities are found in the Pretoriuskop area, on the S36 Nhulanguleni Road near Manzimlope (around 15 km southwest of Tshokwane), and near Phalaborwa Gate.
Living requirements: Roan favour open savanna woodland with medium to tall grass. They feed on the upper parts of leaves, stems, and inflorescences of only a few favoured grass species. Optimum habitat is limited by their apparent sensitivity to grass species composition and height, as well as woody plant height and density. They are dependent on drinking water. In favourable habitat roan occur at 1/25 ha.
Social organisation: Certain adult males are territorial. These males generally remain with some adult females and their offspring to form harem-nursery herds, of up to 12 animals. Some males occur singly or in small bachelor herds.
Population dynamics: The roan is not a seasonal breeder. Age at first parturition is 31 to 33 months, after a gestation of 9 months, mean calving interval is 10 months (i.e. a potential of six calves in five years), and reproductive lifespan is 10 to 12 years. Calf mortality in South African habitats, which are considered sub-optimal, can be as high as 80 % during the first six weeks.

Tsessebe - 50 points

Post by Toko »

Tsessebe Damaliscus lumatus

Estimated abundance in the Kruger Park: 220 (2009)
Status: Not endangered.
Mass: ♂ 130-160 kg; ♀ 100-130 kg. Shoulder height: ♂ 1-1.3 m; ♀ 1-1.2 m.
Distinguishing features: Head long and narrow. Shoulders higher than the hindquarters.
Life-span: ± 12-15 years.
Predators: Main predators include lion, leopard, wild dog and spotted hyena. Young fall prey to serval, caracal, cheetah, jackals and python.
Kruger Park distribution: Found in ecozones L (Mopane shrubveld), N (Sandveld communities), O (Tree mopane savanna) and P (Mopane/bushwillow woodlands) of the Kruger Park, north of the Letaba River. The highest concentration is found in the eastem parts of this range. South of the Letaba Riber, they are found in small scattered herds in ecozones A (Mixed bushwillow woodlands) and E (Thorn veld on gabbro), and in ecozones F (Knobthorn/marula savanna) and I (Lembobo Mountain bushveld) in the Mlondozi Dam area, situated around 10 km north of Lower Sabie.
Living requirements: Tsessebe are grazers, preferring longer grass than do blesbok, selective for palatable grass species and young stages, removing peripheral leaves of tussocks. Water is drunk at least once a day. In the Kruger National Park, the ecological density is roughly 1/20 - 1/40 ha.
Social organisation: Each territorial male remains with a harem-nursery herd throughout the year. Mean herd size is 10. Separate bachelor herds are formed.
Population dynamics: Breeding is seasonal. Mating takes place mainly during February, and calving reaches a peak during October and November. Gestation is 8 months, and age at first parturition is usually 3 years, sometimes 2 years.
