Hey Flutterby, Lisbeth and Alf,

@Lisbeth: Granny is from Durban, she does not like the cold :-)

@Alf: We all squashed into the GC6 at Skukuza, its a great cottage, just a pity that there is only 1 of them 0*\

That elephant teenager shouldn't be trying to drink from the mom, unless it is an illusion? lol :-?

Nice to have the hippo there at Lake Panic! \O

Day 3 – 15th August 2016

For the first morning drive from Skukuza, we planned a loop around the H4-1, H12 (over the bridge), and back on the H1-2, then off to Mathekenyane along the H1-1.

At the H12 bridge we found another clan of Hyena, scavenging off a very old carcass.

With all the slobbering and frothing at the mouth, I imagine that it did not taste too good.

Image

Each Hyena grabbed a piece of what looked like old skin and headed north across the Sabie,

We positioned ourselves on the S30 to catch them crossing, and soon wished we had not, as the smell was horrific.

Image

The rest of the loop was quiet, so we headed on the off to Delaporte when we found a herd of Ellies, they were very excited to have the first morning drink and came charging out the bush.

We were shown the butt end, and so moved on to Mathekenyane for some family photos [O]

The old skeleton must have been disgusting..........if the little meat left had not turned into biltong lol

Very interesting, SN, that carcass... :-?

It may not be that incredibly old, but certainly not rained heavily there for a long time..?

Theory is hyena are the only mammals that can break certain bones and get to the marrow...and can digest absolutely all parts of a carcass eventually. But that is the theory! lol

Nice pics, and thanks for the holiday info! :-0

Day 3 – 15th August 2016

The photos from the top of Mathekenyane

Image

The yearly family photo

Image

And there is always time for some Selfies….

Image

With the Family photos, out the way we headed down the H1-1 to the S112, where we would loop back to Skukuza for lunch. The road was busy with general game and just before Renoster Koppies we spotted a young male lion on the rocks high up the koppie

Image

He did not hang around long and as the cars built up, he headed for cover in the rocks

Image

At Renoster Koppies a small herd of Ellies were drinking

Image

It was 10h45, so we headed back to Skukuza for lunch.

For the afternoon drive we agreed to go north as far as time would allow with a stop at Tshokwane.

Just outside Skukuza on the H4-1 we spotted a Leopard on a bank in the middle of the Sabie, we did not know that this was the first of many cats that afternoon. ^Q^

Image

Continued..
