This is also very good for a group ID project lol

Let's start with its environment. What is it feeding on. What do you suspect the dark substance to be? What is your thought seeing that fungus?

I don't know anything about mushrooms/fungi in arid regions, but perhaps the mushroom sprung up out of either decaying organic matter/carrion, or feces due to the fluids/moisture therein. Maybe the dark area is some of that matter (a "cling-on" ;-) ) and that's what the fly is feeding on.

Also, the characteristic coloration of black and white patterned body with a red tip leads me to suspect it. -O-

the dark substance is maybe because the mushroom is old... very old... dry on one feet lol
I think of an Agaricaceae, maybe Lepiota (with a long rod) or Macrolepiota procera (almost the same)
they are saprophyte (need decomposition of root and other substances of trees)
Sorry too difficult in English lol

Love your theories on the fungus feeding fly!

Do you maybe have a photo of the tree, would love to know if it is one of the alien mesquite trees.

My theory is a little bit different: The dark slime is an essential part of this fungus and it is quite stinky =O:

ExFmem suspects Sarcophagidae, what is the adults' food source?
